Yippee! Yummy! The Fringe Schedule of this year’s Early Music Festival in Utrecht is online!
Utrecht’s Centraal Museum is celebrating it was the first museum to employ a paid fashion curator. It celebrates in style: an impressive fashion exhibition numbering over one hundred items can be visited till the 22nd of October 2017. The exhibition title “Out of Fashion” is of course a small joke, but also hints at how items are displayed.
A real rabbit hopping in the Dutch dunes. A bed-time story for his son about this rabbit. It was all Dick Bruna needed to create Miffy – in Dutch called Nijntje (short for klein konijn; small rabbit) surnamed Pluis (Fluff). In 1955, the first Dick Bruna Miffy booklet was published.
From RASA, I returned to Tivoli-Vredenburg. The last weekend of the 10-day-long Utrecht Early Music Festival, a music market takes place there. This market used to be big and sprawl over several floors of the modern building
Still humming tunes from “Die Zauberflöte” I arrived at RASA. RASA aims to be a stage for world music, Anglo-American pop music, dance courses, western classical music and has been a venue used for fringe concerts during the Utrecht Early Music Festival for years.
Yet, all this did not prevent the Advisory Board of the Dutch system for cultural grants and benefits to advise negatively regarding RASA’s proposed budgetary and business plans for 2017 – 2020. This means RASA will be forced to close.
As usual, I had planned to obtain tickets for a fringe concert at a small venue. Concerto Valiante was going to perform at the period house Huize Molenaar. As had been the case on several days of this Early Music Festival 2016, the fringe ticket boot had opened at 09:00 and within 30 minutes, all tickets for the Concerto Valiante fringe concert had evaporated – while plenty people interested in this particular concert were still on their way to Utrecht.
While browsing the sheet music on offer at a stall of the Early Music market, I noticed the duo again. One was talking to an acquaintance, while the other one was chatting to the stall’s owner. The acquaintance asked after studies and made a remark about the “impressive voice”.
The two volunteers welcoming everybody at RASA told us we were not going to hear the fringe concert for which we had come. The duo Double Entendre had had to cancel at the last moment, due to sad family circumstances. So there was not going to be a concert with two harpsichords and works by Vivaldi, Mozart, le Roux .
It is not just the Scroll Ensemble’s fabulous fringe concert I will miss Sunday 4th of September. I will also miss Jonatan Alvarado’s second fringe concert at this Early Music Festival 2016.
Walking around Utrecht’s old town centre, it is difficult to miss the huge Dom tower. It literally towers over the city. But during the Early Music Festival, its bells also ring all over this city.
