Maastricht’s TEFAF

TEFAF Maastricht will open Friday, 10th of March 2017. The European Fine Art Fair takes place for the thirtieth time. This year, its list of exhibitors numbers around 275 galleries and dealers from all over the world.

This  European – or rather international – Art Fair has grown so popular, important and huge, it no longer takes place just in Maastricht. Since last year, it has branched out to the USA. In New York, TEFAF takes place during the spring and autumn (called TEFAF fall).

For three decades, TEFAF has had masterpieces from every art and design category grab headlines each year. Works on show range from antiquities right up to contemporary works of art, made of practically any material. Of course, all works of art on sale are rigorously vetted and checked.

From less than 90 stands, the list of participants now reaches over 275 names. It is not just the number of art dealers and galleries which increases each year. The number of visitors to TEFAF Maastricht continues to increase each year as well. Roughly 75,000 visitors are expected again this year.

Of course, TEFAF has become more than just an art fair. Apart from the 275 of more “stalls”, there are a symposium, lectures, exhibitions and more. Each of its ten days, TEFAF offers a very busy program.

The loan exhibition concentrates on works from the Galleria Borghese in Rome, Italy. This exhibition will show a selection of very important Italian works of art. The paintings and other works will date from the 15th up to the 17th century.

Penelope Curtis, director of the Lisbon Calouste Gulbekian Museum, will curate “La Grande Horizontale”. Works by artists who have not shown at TEFAF before, will be displayed. The subject will be the reclining figure. Links from Antiquity to modern art will be explored.

TEFAF can be found at the MECC, Forum 100, in Maastricht (Randwyck). The MECC can be easily reached by car and public transport, with the official TEFAF website providing directions; even for visitors arriving at nearby Maastricht Aachen Airport.

From the 10th till the 18th of March, the fair can be visited between 11 AM till 7 PM. Sunday the 19th of March, the fair opens an hour later and closes an hour earlier.
