Fringe concert: Amsterdam Correlli Collective
After the “happening”, the fringe concert by Ensemble Trença (see part 7), I headed for Tivoli-Vredenburg’s Herz room. Earlier during this festival, I had heard a brilliant concert there by the Ensamble Nuevo Mundo. They had pleased their audience so much, they were recalled and obliged by performing a lovely encore.
The concert by the Amsterdam Correlli Collective was excellent, but not as totally absorbing nor as captivating as the concerts by Ensemble Trença (see part 7) or Ensamble Nuevo Mundo (see part 4). In fact, though the concert was fine, I found myself wishing I had opted for one of the other fringe concerts. The one by Los Temperamentos at the Nicolaii Church.
For though it was impressive to have a concert by thirteen musicians, this concert did not challenge the audience. The pieces were familiar ones. They were executed to perfection. But this was not a concert breaking new ground, offering music by unknown or lesser known composers. This was more like an easy listening concert.
The thirteen young talents performed Sinfonia WoO1 by Corelli, Concerto Grosso Op. 6 nr 9 HWV327 by Händel. Armonica Tributo nr 5 (Passaciglia) by Muffat, and rounded their concert off with another Concerto Grosso Op 6 Nr 4 by Corelli.
Or as was stated in the introduction: a Corelli sandwich. No challenging hotdog or big bite for their audience, but a very palatable, easily digestable sandwich. Very nice, nicely executed, just right for a Classic FM audience which does not want taxing classical music.
So this concert left me – though an amateur – rather disappointed with myself. If only I had walked all the way from Tivoli-Vredenburg to the Nicolaii Church to have a go at Los Temperamentos. Especially, as so many in that morning’s queue had harped about that ensemble and their previous concerts.
